Week #1

Do you believe college athletes should be paid beyond their tuition for playing a sport in college? Justify your position on this topic.

  1. No, they are already having their school paid for. Its not like they have to pay for alot of stuff, their meals are paid for if they eat at school or when their team travels. They also probably recieve alot of gifts and money from family and friends for making it to college. If you payed these players to play how would that be any different from a professional sport, they are lucky that they have been given the opportunity they have, they shouldnt be paid for it at all!

  2. I think that college athletes should not pay for the sport they play and their food and water are all ready payed for. So I dont get it why they have to pay extra that is kind of not school related like education.

  3. No, they shouldn't. Isn't it enough that they're having their tuition being payed for them? Basically, they have all their expences payed for while their out on an away game. So, my opinion is that they shouldn't get payed anymore then they have now.

  4. That would be okay as long as every school in the NCAA has equal rules. If you don't have equal rules then one college will be able to "buy" athletes. Looking at football at a major university where their revenue will carry most of the other sports - you would want the best players you could get and keep.
So you then want them to train, play and study. If you don't promote academics, then you are really not providing an ethical service to these athletes. If you have an athlete who can't afford anything at all, and if you don't give them a way to provide for their total education (which is more than just tuition), then you force that player to sacrafice either their training time or academic time.

I think part of the problem is that not everyone really understands the degree of athletic rigor involved to be a succesful college athlete.

I think that it is reasonable for a "full ride" to include tuition, room, and board. I also think that is reasonable to require the athlete to live on campus if the univeristy is paying for it. As far as additional "spending money" there are other ways to legitimately work for that. At the University of Iowa and Minnesota Wrestling programs you can be a camp counsellor in the summer, and make your spending money that way.

  5. I don't think athletes should be payed for playing a college sport because each individual would not be payed equal amounts. Some schools would offer more to certain players who they think are better. I think that tuition is enough for them because it usually covers most of their costs. Plus, the athlete gains experience and it can even set them up for the NBA, and you can't put a price on that! However, I do think they should get a part of the profits for clothing or apparel that uses their name. Other than that, I think it is enough of a privilege just to be apart of the team and the game!

  6. College athletes shouldn't be paid for playing a sport because if they have have a scholarship, their tuition is already paid for. Because colleges are struggling finacially and if they didn't pay the athletes, there would be more money for the colleges to spend elsewhere. Plus, they wouldn't have to raise tuition on everyone else.

  7. I think college athletes should receive a little cash from the University because they are so busy and focused on making themselves better and a great athlete. I think ever University should have a rule or limit they can give out though so some people aren't getting rich just because they are a better athlete.

  8. I do not think that they should get any money for profit. It is unfair that other people pay for their education and athletes make money on it. They should get their tuition payed, but that is it. If they need more, they can do what everybody else in college has to do.

  9. No. they already have their college paided for them. They don't need anymore money. other families need to take out loans for their kids college and they get more mney plus their college. i am one of those that will have to take loans out for college and get scholarships

  10. I think atheletes in college shouldn't receive a whole lot more than their tuition. They have it paid for and yes its hard work but its their choice. I do think though that the school should give them something for advertising that school.

  11. No because most of them are getting there college paid for anyway. If you pay college athletes you might as well pay people who get academic scholarships because there helping the school out too.

  12. I'm going to be the odd one out of this group. I am split on this, only because of the way you look at it. If you have somebody that has put their whole life into that certain sport, which most have, I think they look at it sooner or later as an occupation, not for fun like in high-school. I think that if they are payed people will find more ways to do better and get paid more, which would lead to a better team. Also say you have somebody who can't afford a lot of things but are great at sports. He has an opportunity to play and afford to buy shoes and equipment. Sports aren't cheap.
Then I also believe that they shouldn't be paid for, only the tuition and all the schooling needs. The athletes will more than likely take college and their grades more seriously then what they would if they get paid. They would actually have to work in more than one area to succeed in that sport.

  13. I like Keisha's comments. It is a difficult question. Being a college athlete and keeping up with academics is not easy and requires much time and effort into both areas. Some of these athletes are greedy and want more. Others are very grateful for what they recieve and work hard to pay back the University and society. It would be easier if all of the schools aplied the rules the same way. Some outside boosters put much pressure on the university athletic departments and the university has very little control over this. Tough question.

  14. If you think about, some college athletes are being paid for playing sports in college. Some get full ride scholarships to come and play. But I don't think that they need to get paid extra for playing college sports.

  15. That is a tough one. I believe they should to an extent. Theres a point of being paid for the work your doing, and being beyond over paid. It depends how much time and effort you put into what you're doing, and how your school work let alone is going. Some people may just try to get into a sport just to recieve that awesome pay without truly loving what they are doing. Lots of money is wasted over paying athletes, I believe. It's a topic that should be looked at more often.

  16. I think they should maybe atleast get some kind of money for,but everyone would get equal amounts otherwise it wouldnt be fair to the players that maybe arent a star player and do very well. Every one of the players work very hard to be bigger and better athletes and they should get rewarded for it even if they already get pretty much a full ride scholarship.

  17. I believe that college players should not be paid beyond their tuition. It just seems inappropriate, because if one college would be willing to pay more for a certain person, then that would probably be the sole motivation for that college. It seems wrong.

  18. I'm going to say no to this. Because if they have a full ride they don't need extra money to spend they can get a job. Also if they are that good all they have to do is put up with it for one year and then beome a pro at something and make the big bucks.

  19. No, because do science majors get paid to learn their information? So I think athletes should be treated like everyone else and not get extra money. Science will help the world a lot more than a football player ever will. All the glory goes to the athletes that are already on television. So I conclude athletes are no anymore special and get paid more than the tuition.

  20. I think college athletes should be paid for sports that they play because they are so busy with their sport that they won't have time to work so I believe they should be payed but every school should have the same rule on how much an athlete would get.

  21. I believe that if a college athlete has a full-ride and would be paid to play, all of their attention would turn to their sport and none on academics. Education is what college is really about, after all. Perhaps they could be paid and still focus as long as it wasn't very much.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I say NO, because sports will not help you in the longrun. So in college you should be focusing on how well you are doing in your classes and getting good grades to get a good job to make lots of money. Sports is just a hobbie.

    ReplyDelete
  23. It really depends if athletes should get payed for their college sports. They already get most if not all of their tuition payed so I don't see why they need more money. But, if someone really loves a sport they are most likely going to keep playing and if they are going to become a professional athlete then yes, I can see where them getting payed for college sports comes in. It's not like they would be interested in anything else besides sports so if everyone else goes to school to get a job it is the same thing as athletes, they go to school to play their sport because they love it and that is their own career.

  24. I do not believe that they should be paid because most athletes already have most of their collage paid for. They should worry more about their education.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I dont think college athletics should get paid because i think that getting their college education paid for is a great advantage. Plus, some athletics won't get the same amount of money as one another.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I think college athletes should get paid, because they have to do alot of work pre season just to get ready. plus they rarely have any down time to be studying then adding a job would be alot more difficult too.

    ReplyDelete
  27. No I don't think that they should get paid because college can get really expensive so them getting their tuition paid for should be enough. They are very priveleged to even be playing in college, and they shouldn't get paid for doing something that they enjoy

    ReplyDelete
  28. Yes, I think they should be paid for more of their college expensenses. Mainly because, they put alot of their effort in pleasing their coachs, plus the school makes alot of money off the kids who play sports for them. So instead of it just being tuition that is payed for the colleage should pay for things like books, food and other needs. Plus some students might not enjoy what they do that much, they might just be trying to make it through college.

  29. No, I don't think that college athletes should be payed beyond their tuition. Having their college education paid for is good enough. I don't think they should be given a bunch of extra money beyond that.

    ReplyDelete
  30. No because most of them are getting there college paid for anyway. If you pay college athletes you might as well pay people who get academic scholarships because there helping the school out too because they are helping out the school too.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I don't think it'd very fair because the people who are not into sports will have to pay for their tutions and get jobs to get extra money.

  32. Great comments! This question is personal to me. I played college softball and technically did not get paid to play. The college I played for paid me through my education rather than providing me with a sports scholarship. In a round-about way, I did get paid to play softball, however the school couldn't classify it as a "sports scholarship." I traveled every weekend in the fall and spring to play and couldn't work, therefore I made little money because I couldn't have a job off campus. However, I wouldn't have imagined not playing softball. And, I would never have expected the school to pay me above and beyond my tuition. I was doing what I loved to do: play softball.
